C. A. Halpin was born in Liverpool, where she lived until taking an Expressive Arts (fine art and performance) degree at Brighton Polytechnic. In 1983 she gained a CNAA postgraduate diploma in printmaking whilst still in Brighton. Eventually, she made her way up to London, to the Royal College of Art where she gained an M.A. in Illustration in 1988.
